How to Build an SEO Website

Friday February 10th, 2012

Creating an SEO website is not as easy as inserting keywords and links into your copy. A successful website takes into account both the people using it and the search engines ranking it. To become people friendly, your website should be a balance of aesthetics, usability, and strategy. You also need to understand how search engines work - they rank web pages, not websites. So, it's important that each of your web pages is optimized for search engines.

Here are some pointers to keep in mind when building your website:

Keep your design simple: Your website starts off with a clean slate, and you add design and content to it.  Simple fonts, clear backgrounds, and no nonsense scripts will work best in helping your customers reach a buying decision. While clients love Flash, and we build some incredible flash designs for them, we always ensure it's the right reason for using it. This is because search engines are limited by what they can read in a Flash file. In addition, a Flash website may load slower, scaring away potential visitors. Flash designs can have a strong impact, but they need to be used with caution.

Make navigation easy: An easy to navigate site is one which has plenty of categories clearly defined, and sub categories within them. It will have a site map, which visitors can use to browse through the site or find the pages they are looking for. Include all your major services in your menu.

Create valuable content: Content is a great way to capture audience attention and to hide keywords which search engines can find. When possible, maintain content in all your pages, but make sure it reads well, is grammatically correct, and offers some kind of value to the reader. If you are inserting keywords and links, they should be relevant and fit within the context.

Design a strong home page: The first point of entry into your website is your home page and this should be a strong landing page which encourages visitors to browse your site. Keep it fun and simple or strong and heavy, but always ensure the content on it is engaging and will encourage visitors to stay.

Include titles and tags: When creating each of your web pages, you need to identify the titles and tags you can use; Google and other search engines regularly browse these to give your page its rank. Your page title or title tag is what appears in the bar at the top of your browser. Google uses this to identify your pages. Heading tags allow you to give title to each page and so allocate one H1 tag per page. Within the content you create, you can include keywords and links for stronger SEO. Alt tags are tags which describe images, and they are important if your website hosts a lot of images or if a majority of your audience use text-only browsers. Meta tags are descriptive tags that summarize what the website is about. You can include your main keywords in this and create a separate Meta tag for each page.

Encourage conversion rates with call to action: What do you want people to do once they visit your website? You might want them to purchase your products, share your articles or make a donation; whatever it is, you need a strong call to action on each page. This will help increase conversion rates which is your end objective.

Why Every Business Needs a Corporate Video

Thursday February 16th, 2012

When it comes to online marketing and brand promotional strategies, videos play a top role; in fact YouTube currently boasts 60 hours of uploads a day and 4 billion views. If even a percentage of these users view your video, you can gain tremendous exposure for your brand.

But if 4 billion is not reason enough, here are 11 reasons why your business should invest in a corporate video:

1.    According to Pew Internet, 65% of adult Internet users are on social networking sites.

2.    Sites like VideoWildfire and VidMetrix let you upload and host your videos on multiple sites for a single fee.

3.    It lets you create a dramatic welcome message on your homepage

4.    It helps you build credibility and trust, and establish your brand as an innovative leader

5.    You can use free tools like social networking sites to distribute it and capture a large audience    share.

6.    If done correctly, it is more compelling than images or text

7.    It can be distributed through your website and through video players like YouTube and Vimeo. But it can also be converted into DVD as a marketing tool.

8.    You can access it through your desktop or mobile devices like phones and tablets

9.    You can deliver your message twenty-four hours a day via a corporate video

10.    It makes your business look and feel professional, giving you an edge over your competitors

11.    It's a very affordable marketing initiative, but the perceived value remains high.

A well created video will showcase who you are and what you do, while a poorly created production can actually harm your business more than it does you good. Dry scripts and poorly delivered messages can send visitors scuttling from your site.

If you are considering producing a corporate video, it might be a good idea to invest some time to pre-plan what you are designing and the key points you want covered. Doing so will let you align your brand message with the video's tone to create a show stopping piece.

5 Ideas to Boost Your Web Rankings

5 Ideas to Boost Your Web Rankings

Thursday February 16th, 2012

As a business owner, you need to have an online presence, and a website will help you achieve that. It’s your most potent advertising and marketing tool rolled into one. But without search engine rankings, the chances of visitors flocking to your site or even viewing your site are slim.

Here are 5 great ideas, which will help any website boost its rankings with little cost to the owner.

1. Include accurate keywords, but avoid keyword density: Select keywords for every page using a tool like Google AdWords. Focus on different keywords to describe your home page, service page, and any other page your website might have. You can place keywords in headers, URL, and body copy, but remember keyword stuffing is a definite no-no. Overdoing or repeating the same keywords will have a negative impact on your website and can even get your site banned from Google.

2. Use videos: There are plenty of video hosts like YouTube and Blip.Tv, which means each day, thousands of videos are uploaded. If done correctly, videos are an exciting marketing tool and in particular, Google has a special algorithm to rank YouTube Videos. So the higher your video’s rank, the greater the chance your video will pop up right at the top of the search list. Video uploads on your website might not directly raise your rankings, but they can create more traffic to your site, which in turn can lead to additional clicks and comments which boosts your rankings.

3. Update with fresh content: Search engine spiders trawl through content every day and latch on to keywords and links, which they use to decide ranking. Consider including a blog on your website, which you can update with news and articles on a regular basis. If you don’t have a blog, most websites are built with a content management system that allows you to add fresh content on a daily basis. This content can be in the form of articles, news, links to relevant sites and stories, videos, and images. You can also write articles for article submission sites like ezinearticles.com, and include anchor text that leads visitors back to your site.

4. Create Meta description tags: Meta description tags refer to the paragraph that appears in the search engine’s listings, which provides a brief summery of what the article is about. It’s the perfect opportunity to attract visitors and spiders, before they even reach your home page. Usually, you have around 30 words to work with, so don’t fill it with keywords, but make sure it reads well and provides an accurate description of what the reader can expect.

5. Include Alt tags: Alt tags refer to alternative text description for images. They are displayed even before the image is loaded and used by the visually impaired to recognize images. They are also used by certain browsers like Lynx, which are text-based. It’s another unique opportunity to place your keywords where it’s visible to Google.

So try these ideas and let us know how they work for you!
